Solar heater made of cardboard and foil: a solution for those who want to take care of nature, but do not know how to do it

16 May 2019

This is a real solar heater that can burn your food up to 70 degrees absolutely for free. “Such a device is made of cardboard, food foil using ordinary clerical glue. The glue is just ordinary clerical, because it doesn’t emit anything harmful when heated - this is ordinary liquid glass,” says the author of the exhibit, a well-known Central Asian public person, activist and environmentalist from Karakalpakstan, Yusup Kamalov.

He personally prepared 3 exhibits for participation in the exhibition of best practices and technologies on adaptation to climate change, which was held on April 3-4, 2019 in the framework of the Central Asian Conference on Climate Change (CACCC-2019) in Tashkent.

Yusup Kamalov said that he was introduced with this simple but very effective technology back in 2007 in New York, where he participated at the meeting of the 15th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development under the UN. “Among other exhibits, my attention was attracted by a simple solar furnace made of cardboard covered with foil. At the beggining I was skeptical about this idea, but I tried stewed chicken, boiled corn and vegetable stew cooked before my eyes under the New York sun and realized that this solar oven is quite viable! ” – says he to the participants of the exhibition.

The principle of technology is very simple: the sun is reflected in the focus of the heater and, accordingly, heats what is (for example, dishes with products) in this focus. The maximum temperature in good weather - from 11-15 degrees Celsius to about 70 degrees.

There are some subtleties of use: for example, it is better to use black matte dishes. Time for cooking takes a little more, but we do not need any wood or gas! Just need to slowly turn the card after the sun. Such a solar oven can be installed not only at home, but also in the office and to warm our dinners in it, without prejudice to nature and saving resources. Moreover, it is more efficient to use the furnace indoors, because there is no wind.

Yusup Kamalov: “I am most impressed by the idea that most people are environmentally responsible and want to contribute to nature conservation, but do not know how to do it. Such a device - this solar oven - is easy to manufacture and allows you to save nature. Its cost, the maximum cost is $ 2. ”

The exhibition of best practices and technologies on adaptation to climate change worked within the framework of the Central Asian Climate Change Conference (TsAKIK-2019), on April 3-4, 2019 in Tashkent and demonstrated technologies that have already proven their effectiveness at the local level. Exhibits of the exhibition - technologies that meet the 4 criteria:

• low cost (no more than $ 500);

• focus on adaptation to climate change;

• easy to do with your own hands;

• safety of use for children and women.

Video instruction:

In total, about 100 technologies were collected as part of the preparation of the exhibition and about 20 of those which met these criteria were selected. Especially for the exhibition 7 working models were prepared. At the end of the exhibition, the exhibits were handed over to the NGO Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan for wide distribution to the masses.
